"The Jennifer I Knew": Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal pictures from Filmfare

This lovely Shashi-authored photograph collection was published in the December 1–15, 1984 issue of Filmfare. I was ethically torn over blogging these: they're not my photos to share, but the bittersweetness of them tugged at my heartstrings until I let them loose on you. Look at them in New York in 1963:

part standard tourists seeing the sights squinting against the sun and wind, part easy, bouyant confidence of critical acclaim for the struggling artist, part the curve of her coat against the straight flagpoles. DIL SQUISH.

Thanks Beth. I just watched 36 Chowringhee Lane for the umpteenth time and was struck again by her luminous presence and ability to convey complex emotion in simple, heart-rending ways. Amazing movie.

Lovely, lovely. I don't think you should worry at all about sharing---after all, Shashi shared them first :) Thanks.

Beautiful photos - thanks for posting them.

Felicity Kendal's memoir of their childhood in India is well worth a read.

Thanks for sharing!
I remember an article where there were less picture but more anecdotes, like where he remembers how as a birthday surprise for Jennifer he flew in her sister. hehad to get up early int he morning to pick her up and he said that he had to go for a sunrise shot at the beach. And feigning reluctance he said that he will sleep longer and they can shot it at sunset. Jennifer would hear no such thing and she sent him off.

Awww... They look like the poster-people of romantic (and happy love) in that first picture. Thanks for sharing, Beth. I am with Greta about your posting these pictures. Shashi shared them with Filmfare readers, and we are ardent Filmfare readers! :D

harvey, any more gems of Shashi-gossip you want to share?
