All the baddies combined together to weave different characters which was a sort of experiment unlike GUMNAAM where all the bad characters were not film baddies. Great acting from the best baddies and a fast moving plot. Obviously inspired by the typical Hollywood plot which was not a popular formula in Hindi movies then. The review here is true, to my mind. O...It makes me sad that I have not yet seen this.

On a more substantive note, I am intrigued by your description of it as "taut" and "not masala". When you look at the cast and the themes it looks so masala-y that it must be an interesting experience when you realize it's not. Deewaar had some of that for me. The first time I saw it, it wasn't what I expected at all - and the effect was profound.

carla/filmigeek
http://filmigeek.netFilmi Geekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03452657736759131107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-23851864348088481072013-05-29T08:33:26.537-05:002013-05-29T08:33:26.537-05:00PRAN! :)PRAN! :)Beth Loves Bollywoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05540154833326987567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-46233475323335287622013-05-29T03:54:32.749-05:002013-05-29T03:54:32.749-05:00I saw this movie some months later and had loved i...I saw this movie some months later and had loved it .. especially for PRAN!!!!
The songs and the whole cast was awesome.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12336825356777930963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-77667432838779208572013-05-28T09:27:03.545-05:002013-05-28T09:27:03.545-05:00You're right that "taut" is kind of ...You're right that "taut" is kind of hacky, though. (Not you=Todd. You=reader.) As much as I love Gaddaar, I wouldn't make a claim that it was best of that year without doing a lot more watching of 1973's output.

You were very specific in your object of "taut," not just slapping it on the whole movie like I did. And you spelled it right.

I am SO glad you knew what the score was from. No wonder there's no mention of it in the titles. I actually haven't read your review yet because I wanted to write my own without being TOO under the influence of your awesomeness - but now I can without fear. Obscure or otherwise, I think calling Gaddaar one of the best films of 1973 is saying an awful lot, given all the awesome that came out that year, but I think I'd be on board. And, yes, 70s obsessive that I am, I too only just became aware of it this year. The acting is definitely its lead stength, and I also loved the spotlight that was put on Iftekhar and Ranjeet.

BTW, much of the instrumental score was needle-dropped from Ennio Morricone's S/T to For A Few Dollars More, so you were spot on in identifying a western theme.Toddhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15890338576052689861noreply@blogger.com
