Have you heard of the movie "Jai Santoshi Maa"? It is a low budget devotional/mythological movie from 1975? It was a huge hit that year despite strong competition fron Sholay and Deewar. Apparently people were so in love with/ devoted to the Goddess Santoshi that they would throw money at the screen as an offering. Also, the plot of the movie sounds like something out of an Ekta Kapoor soap only here it is goddesses that are jealous and scheming while wearing shiny clothes and bad jewellery.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-28006241708663252752011-08-15T22:45:30.013-05:002011-08-15T22:45:30.013-05:00Larissa - BWAHAHAHAHA re: Shruti! But also, no one had well written characters to work with, so I don't mean that as a particular slight against her. But dear god, Katrina being Meryl is SO delightfully unfathomable! What else have you seen Shruti in - because clearly I must avoid-yaar it!

zeeniebaby - Hmmm. I think if snakes tend to lodge into your dreams in a bad way, you are best to avoid this one. I found some of them kind of scary and I am generally fine with snakes (though I do scare easily in general). Shruti is not a shape-shifter. There are scenes in which she has a "no makeup" look, and in those I too thought she looked very much like her mother. I also agree that in others she looks like Sonam! I think it was her hair, though don't ask me why.

And Tim would probably want someone to bring an editing eye to the costumes, but I would want to slap his hand away gently and say "Shhhh! Let the pretties have their fun!" and then we would giggle while sipping lemonade and throwing popcorn at the screen.Beth Loves Bollywoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05540154833326987567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-42088613080627131272011-08-15T22:37:19.570-05:002011-08-15T22:37:19.570-05:00All those stills make me want to watch the movie. ...All those stills make me want to watch the movie. But, snakes are my big fear and I do not want to have a week of nightmares afterwards. So, I will pay attention to the masalawreck part of your review and not watch the movie.

Is Shruthi Hassan playing a shape shifter by any chance? I have never seen her in a movie/ song before (only seen photographs). For the first few minutes of that video I kept thinking wow, she looks exactly like her mother and then she started looking like Sonam Kapoor with some fleeting glimpses of Aishwarya.

Also, as a PR watcher, I really want to hear Tim Gunn's comments about those clothes :)zeeniebabyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18187674242064498647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-58303294098082909412011-08-14T21:54:45.227-05:002011-08-14T21:54:45.227-05:00I haven't seen the songs. TBH nothing I heard or saw about this film before it was released appealed to me - especially not the presence of Shruti Hassan who, IMO, makes Katrina Kaif look like Meryl Streep. But I will have to watch it at some point, because I am a Siddharth completist. Sigh. Fortunately, I know just the right person to invite over for a snark-filled viewing :-)larissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11969966402085938024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-65526593455039525052011-08-14T19:19:10.811-05:002011-08-14T19:19:10.811-05:00But what a blowout it was! I personally prefer fabric spending to action, but I realize I might be in a minority on that point, especially in a film that has "warrior" in (one of) its title(s). Yeah, Sid was not terribly convincing beyond the swinging. I watched this with Filmiholic and we agreed that he seemed to have been told to "stick the landing" like an Olympic gymnast after each sequence. Not impressive.

I'm sorry to hear some of the sets weren't as good on the big screen! Poo!

That's an interesting point about the cultural influences. Filmiholic and I enjoyed some of the Chinoiserie aspects (all the red, the motifs on Sid's blindfold) as well as the Dharam Veer/TARDIS-esque non-commitment to place and time in costuming. But yes, it did remind me a lot of the Disney cartoons I loved as a kid in the 70s and early 80s.Beth Loves Bollywoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05540154833326987567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-53864420021515321472011-08-14T19:12:55.820-05:002011-08-14T19:12:55.820-05:00I agree with your theory that all the money alloca...I agree with your theory that all the money allocated to story development was swallowed up by the fabric budget blowout. And I wasn't at all convinced by Sid as warrior - sorry! He did a lot of posing with a sword but that was about it. I only liked the sets and props in the indoor or night scenes - on the big screen the painted polysterene and fairy lights were too obvious in the daylight scenes and looked cheap and new.
What I found interesting was how standard Western fairytale/fantasy most of the imagery and story was, with little apart from the language to mark it as an Indian film. Perhaps that's the Disneyfication influence.Templehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02100144509902267935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-47309023605139232072011-08-14T19:02:25.173-05:002011-08-14T19:02:25.173-05:00PS Have you watched the songs? Er, "avant garde," perhaps?

I think you should have people over to watch it with you, especially if you can pause while watching and all say "What was THAT?" and "Ooooooh!" If it's under, say, $7, it's totally worth it - or even more if you are a set fancier (which I admit I am, even though I have no training or knowledge to back it up).Beth Loves Bollywoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05540154833326987567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15977843.post-9929702933847397062011-08-14T18:57:18.497-05:002011-08-14T18:57:18.497-05:00lol!
